LOCAL NON-PROFITS COME TOGETHER FOR FIRST ANNUAL SLIDELL BBQ CHALLENGE

New Orleans, LA - February 24, 2010 - If you are a barbecue griller who loves to compete, or a barbecue lover just looking to sample some of the best BBQ in the country, then prepare yourself for a tangy feast at the SLIDELL BBQ CHALLENGE Friday - Saturday, April 2 - 3, 2010 in the heart of Olde Towne Slidell, bounded by First Street from Robert Street to Front Street.

Organizers say that the goal of the BBQ is threefold - to learn more about BBQ and culinary techniques, to bring attention to Historic Olde Towne Slidell, and to raise money for the East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity and PBS station WYES.

Families will have plenty to do free of charge: visit Olde Towne merchants, watch cooking demos and kids can meet and take photos with WYES’ and everyone’s favorite monkey, Curious George, Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The SLIDELL BBQ CHALLENGE has a great music line-up: The Redoux Band April, 2 from 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.; Hi-Rize, April 3 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and Ti Jonne Reyes and For Play, April 3 from 6:00 p..m. - 10:00 p.m.

Frank Jackson, event organizer and certified Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) judge said, “The idea for holding a championship in Slidell originated as a way for a number of non-profits who are members of the Slidell Service Club Council to work together on one larger project.”

Professional cookers from all over the U.S. will compete in four categories - chicken, pork ribs, pork (shoulder or Boston Butt) and beef brisket. A panel of certified KCBS judges will take part in the judging of the competition.

Entries will be judged on appearance of meat, taste, and tenderness.

Backyard grillers will compete in two categories - ribs and chicken. Attendees that purchase tickets will be able to sample the meat and vote in the People’s Choice Award of the Backyard chef’s competition on April 3rd.

The sponsorship committee for the Slidell BBQ Challenge hopes to have about 40 professional teams competing, 40-50 backyard competitors and a Kids Que Competition. Prizes are: Grand champion $2,500; Reserve Champion $1,500; Third Overall $800; Fourth Overall $400; Fifth Overall $200. Five Places in Four Meats: First $500; Second $300; Third $200; Fourth $100; Fifth $50. Backyard BBQ Competition $500. Kids Que Competition trophy.

Deadline to register in the competition is Friday, March 19, 2010. This event is sanctioned by the KCBS and has received its State Championship accreditation. This is a joint undertaking of the Slidell Noon Lions Club, Rotary Club of Slidell and WYES. Proceeds from the event will benefit the East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity and WYES.

If you or your business is interested in becoming an event sponsor, your company will receive the following for a $10,000 sponsorship: signage at the entertainment stage area, multiple stage announcements, logo on the  SLIDELL BBQ CHALLENGE’s Web site and advertising, plus entry into the backyard competition and a tent for their guests. In addition, there are many sponsorship levels ranging from $250 - $5000. To find one that fits your company, please contact Skinny King at arnoldking@att.net or (985) 643-6863.

Northshore Leader Provides Outstanding Account of Recent Leadership Tangipahoa Education Experience

My name is Donnisha Alexander a student in the 2009-2010 Leadership Tangipahoa class. My sponsor is the Town of Kentwood and I represent Mayor Harold Smith and Town Council. We started our Leadership Tangipahoa class on September 17, 2009 and have had six sessions. These six sessions included Parish Government, City Government/Environment, Hidden Treasures (Art, Culture, History), Economic Development, Health Systems & Elder Care, and Education. Each class has exposed us to an overview of what Tangipahoa Parish has to offer. The more exposure I get from this class, the more I realize how I love living in Tangipahoa Parish.

Tangipahoa Parish is abundantly rich in resources. I did not realize how much our public schools have to offer our children until our recent visit within the Tangipahoa Parish School System. We began our morning visit at the Central Office in Amite. Superintendent Kolwe greeted the class and gave a birds-eye view of the system staff, employment, student enrollment, and budget finances. Board President Ann Smith presented us with a power point exposing the “Role of the Superintendent and the Nine Board Members”. After curriculum and finances were discussed, Attorney Patin gave us information on the court desegregation case and future plans for Tangipahoa Parish School System. This included the magnet school program for Hammond and the proposed court desegregation plan.

Our first site visit was at Independence Elementary School where we met Principal Cathy Leblanc and staff. She gave us an overview of Independence Elementary. She enlightened the class on how the public schools and catholic schools were different. Teachers demonstrated the use of the smart board and exposed us to the mini computer centers found in every classroom.

By noon, we arrived at Hammond High School where we met Principal Carmon Moore. An exotic lunch was prepared and served by the Schools’ Pro Start Training Program, then we toured the campus. The group saw how the ninth graders use the reading centers that are provided in every class. We were shown the weather meter and told how the meter readings are sent to NASA daily. We also saw the Robot that the students are working toward for the Robotic competition.

Later we went to the La. Technical College. There we met Dean Mack Jackson. He informed us about the enrollment, different campus locations, and the entrance requirements of La. Technical College. After receiving information about the school we toured the campus and learned what the different departments offered.

Finally, we arrived at Southeastern where President Dr. John Crain spoke to us and gave information on enrollment, the cost of tuition, an admission requirements for Southeastern University. Dr. Crain brought to our attention that tuition will be increasing due to budget cuts and also talked to us about the future plans of Southeastern University Campus.

In conclusion, Tangipahoa Parish Public School System has much more to offer in their curriculum than most citizens realize, therefore they should update and keep our citizens more knowledgeable of the many wonderful available offerings within the total system.

Upon completion, the 20,000 square foot Children’s Museum of St. Tammany will provide a learning environment that will serve the needs and interests of local and regional children, families and schools by providing exhibits and programs that stimulate curiosity and imagination, in addition to nurturing a desire for life-long learning. The JLGC first initiated discussions with St. Tammany Parish about the desire and need for a children’s museum in St. Tammany in 2004. Now, almost seven years later, the museum is well on its way to becoming a reality as the Koop Drive road extension is expected to be completed later this Spring, the re-routing of the Tammany Trace has begun and an Exhibit Design Search will take place by late April.

“This year’s celebration and fundraising efforts are well on its way to being even bigger and better than past years based on the huge outpouring of support from the community and corporate leadership,” said JLGC Children’s Museum Chairperson Lisa Barnett. “We know that the community truly understands the impact that the Children’s Museum will have on our children’s quality of life in St. Tammany and their involvement and support are critical elements to its success.”

“The Children’s Museum of St. Tammany will be a huge asset to our community,” remarked Parish President Kevin Davis. “We are thrilled to be partners in this wonderful project for the children of the area and look forward to welcoming families to the new state-of-the-art museum in the near future.”

The Junior League of Greater Covington is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
