“Keep Your Butt in your Pants”
(6/22/10 Mandeville, LA.) - Keep Mandeville Beautiful (KMB) is kicking off “Keep Your Butt in your Pants” a cigarette butt litter campaign to encourage smokers to dispose of their butts responsibly.
First issued in 2008, KMB is conducting a second round of distributing pocket ashtrays in an attempt to reduce the amount of cigarette butt litter. The campaign is a joint effort between Keep Mandeville Beautiful and local businesses who have agreed to help distribute the ashtrays to smokers.
Eleven local stores are distributing free pocket ashtrays to reduce the amount of cigarette butt litter in Mandeville. Pocket ashtrays are small, portable ashtrays that smokers can carry on their person to extinguish and dispose of their cigarette butts when there is no ashtray available. The business partners will also be displaying a “Keep Your Butt in your Pants” poster. When smokers purchase cigarettes from the store they can ask the clerk for a free ashtray or the clerk will offer one to them. KMB is supplying the stores with the pocket ashtrays free of cost. Pocket ashtrays can be picked up at the following locations in Mandeville; Blue Harbor, Town Crier (both locations), Texaco (Girod St.), Bargain Stop Fuels, Chevron and North Lake Spur (Hwy. 22), Shell (East Causeway), Jemworks, Rusty’s Tobacco Shop, and Discount Zone.
Studies have shown that most smokers don’t make the connection between cigarette butts and litter! In Mandeville, cigarette butt litter is the number one litter problem. This is evident by observing the large amounts of butts collected at intersections where there are signal lights or stop signs. To make the problem even worse, these lightweight butts often make their way into our ditches and waterways, threatening the quality of the water and the lives of the creatures that live in the water.
Cigarette Butt Fast Facts:
- Cigarette butt litter is the world’s greatest environmental litter problem.
- About 95% of cigarette filters are composed of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic which does not quickly degrade and can persist in the environment.
- Cigarette butt litter is not just a local problem. Communities across the country report that cigarette butts are the most littered item – representing over 34% of the items collected during cleanups.
- Most cigarette butts travel into waterways through the storm water systems where toxic chemicals leak out of the filters threatening the quality of the water and the lives of the creatures that live in the water.
To request a pocket ashtray or for more information about cigarette butt litter email KMB at KMB@cityofmandeville.com or call 624-3165.
Nothing says Fourth of July like a neighborhood fireworks show or parade. But in recent years, many U.S. towns were forced to cancel their official Independence Day events, when funding ran short. Liberty Mutual would like to help.
From now until June 14th, Liberty Mutual is hosting a contest allowing towns across America to compete for $10,000 Bring Back the 4th grants. They are offering 10 grants total, divided between small, medium and large towns.
How can you earn a grant for Slidell? Click, http://www.libertymutualgroup.com/omapps/ContentServer?pagename=LMGroup%2FViews%2FLMG&ft=2&fid=1239994513828&cid=0, to take a brief quiz on “Responsible Moments in U.S. History,” focusing on people and events that helped shape our nation and inspire others. Each completed quiz counts as one credit towards a BringBackThe4th.com visitor’s town, and credits are earned by quiz completion alone, not by quiz score.
The 10 U.S. towns that successfully encourage the highest quiz participation among their residents will be eligible to win $10,000 grants! Winners will be notified and announced during the week of June 14th.
If you need further information regarding the SLIDELL HERITAGE FESTIVAL, please contact, Brenda Case/Volunteer Chair at brendac@ldcv.com or via cell phone at 985-707-3722.
Please, let’s all take time to complete the quiz and raise $10,000 for this Festival which donates its proceeds to many different local charities each year!!

Early detection of cancer saves lives. Screening is a method of detecting cancer early before symptoms occur.
COVINGTON, LA- St. Tammany Parish Hospital and the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Covington will host a free community-based prostate cancer screening on Saturday, June 19 from 9 a.m. to noon at Walmart, 218 Cumberland St., Bogalusa.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men.
“This screening is for men age 45 and older who do not have a doctor or have not been screened in the past 12 months,” Chryl Corizzo, RN, BSN, OCN and STPH Cancer Program Director said.
The prostate screening is performed by a physician and includes a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and physical exam. No fasting is required.
Louisiana’s cancer incidence rates for most common cancers are in line with the rest of the nation. However, the state has inordinately high cancer mortality rates.
“This clearly indicates the need for early detection interventions,” Kate Messina, Mary Bird Perkins early detection director said. “Screenings offer the potential to diagnose cancer at its earliest stage when the greatest chance for a cure exists.”
The screenings are made possible by donor gifts. Call 1-888-616-4687 for more information.
