Cajun fiddler and entertainer Amanda Shaw is hosting a free concert on Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 1 – 5PM to benefit the St. Tammany Parish Head Start Program. The concert will feature an impressive line-up of regional favorites including Rockin’ Dopsie, the Top Cats and Amanda Shaw. The concert will take place at Chenier Marketplace in
Mandeville, located at 1901 Hwy 190, next to Greenleaves and across from the Mandeville Police Department. Additional free parking is generously provided by First Baptist Church.

The concert will open with a performance by the NOLA Treblemakers at 1PM followed a performance by Amanda Shaw and Rockin’ Dopsie. The first Head Start project to be funded with the proceeds is the purchase and the installation of seat belts on school buses which will enable the children to take field trips. Future fundraisers will be given for other projects for the Head Start Program needs. “We are thrilled to have Amanda Shaw help with fundraising for our
program,” said Fred Taylor, Covington Head Start Center Director. “Amanda and her family have been dedicated to the success of this program and we truly really appreciate their efforts.”

Admission to the concert is free, but sponsorships are available to ensure the funding goal is reached. Companies and individuals interested in donating are encouraged to purchase sponsorships. Sponsor a seatbelt for $150, a bench (3 seat belts) for $450 and a row (6 seat belts) for $900. An entire bus sponsorship is available for $9,000. In addition to sponsorships, donations will also be accepted at the concert.

Amanda’s family is in the process of adopting a 2-1/2 year old little boy who attends the Covington Head Start Program. This
particular project is very close to Amanda’s heart and is inspired by her baby brother Alex. “After visiting the Covington Head Start School, I noticed that the program couldn’t afford some of the extras that our other schools have.” said Amanda Shaw. “Only the poorest families qualify for this program, but every child deserves an environment that enhances their lives with positive academic accomplishments and creative opportunities.”

Donations can be made payable to the RCCDC. Donations should be sent to the Covington Head Start Program, c / o Fred Taylor, Covington Head Start Center Director, 73060 East Stadium Dr., Covington, LA 70433. The Head Start Programs are 501C3 organizations, tax id number 72-0680604.

Head Start is a comprehensive program designed to foster the healthy development of young children from low-income
families. The program has grown from a brief, eight-week summer program for preschoolers in 1969, to a year-round
program today, serving children from birth to age five, as well as pregnant women. Head Start provides children from low-income families with daily nutritious meals and many opportunities for social, emotional and intellectual growth that can prepare them for success in school and in life. The program also connects children to a health care source and provides vital support services to their families.

Due to their growing popularity, cell phones are fast becoming a favorite target of thieves here, nationally, and internationally. To reduce your chances of becoming the victim of a cell phone theft, we offer you the following safety tips:

 Always be aware of your surroundings. Thieves may be watching you.

 Use your cell phone security lock.

 Avoid becoming distracted by your cell phone conversation when walking on the street.

 Keep your cell phone out of site. Don’t hang it from your purse or jacket.

 Switch the ringer off to avoid attracting the attention of thieves.

 Never loan your cell phone to a stranger. In case of an emergency, offer to make the call for them.

 Consider using hands-free technology.

Here are some important tips to help you keep your cell phone and data safe if it is stolen:

 Keep proper details:

Create a well organized record of all the necessary details and information related to your mobile and keep them safe and sound in a safe place. Make sure that the information recorded with you doesn’t miss out these: Your phone number; Make & model of your phone; Details about color & appearance; the pin code or security lock code of your phone; IMEI numbers (if you’re using GSM phones).

 Security mark addition to protect a cell phone: When you lose your phone, there can be two possibilities – first, that you left it somewhere and it wasn’t stolen and there’s somebody looking for helping you out. Second, somebody has stolen your phone purposely. When you have placed a security mark, it will be easy to get hold of your phone in both the cases. So, simply use some ultra violet pen to write your post code, house number or address on your mobile handset as well as its battery. This will help your mobile become more easily identifiable in case it gets lost or stolen. You can even think of writing your email id or some other contact number. You may never know if somebody wants to return you your mobile. So, don’t forget to do this to protect a cell phone.

 Lock your phone using Security Lock Code or PIN feature: Once your phone is locked with security lock code or PIN code, the thief who has stolen your mobile will not be able to use your phone or have access to your personal numbers stored on the SIM card. This way it will be safe from any kind of misuse.

 Get your phone registered with your network operator: The moment you discover that your mobile phone’s missing, immediately report its loss to your network operator. With the help of your IMEI number, they’ll be able to get your handset as well as the account blocked. There are certain wireless carriers ready to help you out. Once your phone is blocked, it won’t ever be possible to use the phone again even with some other SIM card. This kind of step to protect a cell phone is a bit risky one as once you have disabled your phone; you’ll not be able to use it again. Again, you need to keep all the records related to the registration of your phone so that the thief may not be misusing your phone even after the registration.

 Get your phone number disabled: This is another way to stay safe from the thief who has got hold of your mobile. The best way is to get both your account as well as number disabled so that the thief doesn’t get to use your services or make money by selling it.

 Request your carrier to start up with a formal investigation immediately: This proves helpful as your carrier gets aware of the theft and you can immediately be saved from unnecessarily paying your bills even if your phone is not totally saved.

 Lodge a complaint with the police: In many cases you need to show the copy of the FIR, so don’t forget to do this as soon as possible. So, along with all the other important actions like blocking account and number get a complaint against the theft with the police to protect a cell phone.

 Use anti-theft software on your mobile: This is indeed the best and most effective method to keep your mobile safe and sound. And when it comes to safeguard your stuffs from technically smart people, you got to use technically smart measures and using anti phone theft software.

For more information on what you can do to safeguard your property, contact your local Police Department, Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa, or visit one of the many crime prevention websites listed below that offer free safety tips on being streetwise and address many crime prevention issues.

Calling all artists who reside in St. Tammany Parish — you now have an opportunity to showcase your work at the upcoming Friends of the Harbor Center’s annual gala on May 5, appropriately themed Cinco de Mayo.

The Friends of the Harbor Center, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization made up of volunteers who work to raise funds for purchasing needed equipment for the facility, is recruiting both adult and high school-aged artists to make custom piñatas out of paper-mache. Submissions will be displayed at the event, and winners will earn cash prizes.

According to Irma Cry, chairperson of the board, “We were looking for a way we could get local artists involved with our event. Since this year’s gala is on Cinco de Mayo, we felt piñatas were the natural choice.” Cry said the group plans to incorporate them into the event decor so all must reflect a “Mexican” theme and be a minimum of 16” tall. Besides those few rules, the sky is the limit.

“We can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with,” said Cry. “Since the piñatas can be any shape or color combination, we expect to see a lot of variety and originality.”

This is the first time that the Friends of the Harbor Center has hosted its annual event on the popular party date. It is also the first time the group has asked local artists to get involved.

Prizes will be awarded to first ($75), second ($50) and third place ($25) winners in both the adult and student groups. In addition, people who attend the event will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite submission, and the one with the most votes will be crowned “People’s Choice” and win $100.

“I encourage everyone to get involved either by making a piñata or attending the Cinco de Mayo gala,” Cry added. “The funds we raise will help the Northshore Harbor Center purchase needed equipment for the venue so it can continue to be an economic development engine for our parish.”

The piñatas are due by 5:30 pm on April 23, 2012, to the Northshore Harbor Center, along with a signed registration form. For more information or complete rules, please call 985-781-3650.

Businessman and former Mandeville Civil Service Municipal Board Vice Chairman, David Ellis, has announced his candidacy for the District 1 seat on the Mandeville City Council. The election is to be held March 24, 2012.

Ellis’ civic service commitment began as a Boy Scout, eventually attaining the rank of Eagle Scout — awarded to him at Mandeville City Hall in 1990. In Mandeville, David has served on various boards and committees, including the Fontainebleau Property Owners Association, Cedarwood Condominium Association, and as the St. Tammany West Chamber of Commerce appointee to the Mandeville Municipal Civil Service Board, where he worked directly with police and city employees.

David continues to support the local community as an active Northlake-Mandeville Rotarian, Board Secretary and volunteer for the Covington Three Rivers Art Festival, and President-elect of the St. Tammany Leadership Alumni Foundation, which “identifies, trains and supports emerging leaders in the area,” said Ellis in the announcement.

Inspired by his experience completing the Leadership St. Tammany program in 2008, Ellis founded NorthshoreLinks.com, a Northshore community portal and information website. “It’s a valuable resource to many in the community seeking local news, event information, and pretty much anything related to the Northshore,” he said.

Ellis, 37, attended Northlake Christian School and graduated from St. Paul’s in Covington. He then received his bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and his MBA from LSU, with marketing and finance concentrations. Upon graduation, David moved to Chicago and then New York, gaining valuable experience working for IBM as a financial analyst and accountant.

Ellis returned to the area in 2003, where most of his energies have been focused on the growth and development of his family’s Mandeville-based insurance company. David proudly says his greatest achievement in life is being married to his wonderful wife Susan and raising their two children, Bradley and Caroline, together.

“If elected, I believe I will do an excellent job for the City of Mandeville and can help move the City in the right direction,” noted Ellis. “Working with the Mandeville Civil Service Board, alongside our police and city employees, I’ve been exposed directly to our city’s most valuable assets, its workforce. I plan to continue serving our community and hope to do so as a Mandeville City Council member beginning in 2012.”

St. Tammany Parish President-elect Pat Brister this afternoon announced the structure and membership of her Transition Team as she prepares to take over leadership of one of the fastest-growing communities in the country on January 9.

At a 2 p.m. press conference near Covington, Brister explained that her Transition Team has been divided into eight committees, each with a specific area of focus. The committees will operate under the headings of Administrative Policy; Boards and Agencies; Contracting for Professional Services; Customer Service; Economic Development; Funding Government; Intergovernmental Relations; and, Personnel and Human Resources. Each committee will review current Parish policies, practices and guidelines, and make recommendations to Brister about changes to or maintenance of those specific operations.

Howard Daigle, Jr., Managing Partner of the Daigle Fisse & Kessenich law firm, has been appointed Director of the Transition and will manage the Transition Team process.

The Administrative Policy Committee will be chaired by Bill Newton, an insurance executive and former Louisiana Assistant Commissioner of Insurance. Membership of that committee will include Hank Miltenberger, S. Michele Blanchard and Elvige Cassard.

The Boards and Agencies Committee will be chaired by Maura Donahue, vice president of DonahueFavret, Inc., and former chair of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Members will include Lacey Toledano, Dawn Sharpe Brackett, Glen Villalobos, Sam Caruso and Evans Spiceland.

The Contracting for Professional Services Committee will be chaired by Jim Rozycki. Members will include Mandeville Councilwoman Trilby Lenfant, Darryl Cherry, Kevin Murphy and Sean Burkes.

The Customer Service Committee will be led by Dian Lusher, president of DYNEL, Inc. Members will include Clerk of Court Malise Prieto, Ron Franco and Bill Sims.

The Economic Development Committee will be chaired by Marty Mayer, president of Stirling Properties and former Chair of GNO, Inc. Members will include Eric Schouest, Brent Woods, Jim Hudson, Peter Link and John Crain.

The Funding Government Committee will be led by Todd Richard, President of FARA. Members will include Dick Night, Albert ”Joey” Richard, Glen Runyon and David Briggs.

The Intergovernmental Relations Committee will be chaired by Lenfant. Members will include Jay Seale, John Dubreuil, Janet Fabre Smith and Tim Carpenter.

The Personnel/Human Resources Committee will be chaired by Northshore Foundation CEO Susan Bonnett. Members will include Cassard, Donahue, Jason Cobb and Bruce Clement.

Brister will take office Jan. 9, 2012, but the Transition Team’s work is expected to continue through early spring of next year.

“Transitioning from a 12-year administration to a new one is something to be undertaken with great care, thought and study,” Brister said. “By including some of the best minds and community leaders St. Tammany has to offer, I want to ensure the quality of service our citizens expect and deserve is as seamless as possible, while we pursue improvements without rushing to implement change.

“I look forward to working with these committees and the entire team as we move forward in coming months, and I know their input will be invaluable in building the future of St. Tammany Parish.”
