Northshore Cancer Care Leaders Hosting Tobacco Cessation Program

“Kick the Habit” program designed to help people quit smoking for good

COVINGTON, LA – St. Tammany Parish Hospital and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center are partnering to host free tobacco cessation classes Tuesdays, Sept. 14 to Nov. 9, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Paul D. Cordes Outpatient Pavilion, 16300 Hwy. 1085, Covington.  Free lunch will be provided.  Reservations are required.  Call 985-898-4581 to register or for more information.

“Most people try to quit smoking five to seven times before becoming successful,” Chryl Corizzo, RN, BSN, OCN and STPH cancer program director and ethics committee chair said.  “People come to this program because they are frustrated, truly ready and want to quit.”

The nine-week class will provide tools needed to quit smoking for good.  Participants will identify their readiness to quit and set a quit date.  Smokers will learn how to formulate a quitting action plan such as quitting cold turkey or determining which smoking cessation aids are best for them.  Most importantly, smokers will get help changing the behavioral aspect of smoking by developing an action plan for what to do when not smoking.  They will also receive support during those critical few weeks after quitting.
