Greater Northshore Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Announces Annual National Philanthropy Day®
Mandeville, LA. – October 5, 2011 – On November 17, 2011 the Greater Northshore Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) will formally recognize greater Northshore outstanding philanthropists. National Philanthropy Day® is the day set aside to recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy – and those people active in the philanthropic community – have made in our lives, our communities and our world. 2011 marks the 26th anniversary of this special day in the United States.
The National Philanthropy Day luncheon will take place on Thursday, November 17, 2011, from 11:30am – 1:30pm at the Pontchartrain Ballroom of the Clarion Inn, 501 North Highway 190, Covington, with a special performance by renowned pianist, Ronnie Kole.
Joel Champagne will be honored as the 2011 Outstanding Philanthropist. Through the years, Champagne’s generous philanthropy has supported many local organizations and educational institutions, most significantly the Southeastern Louisiana University Foundation, Lion Athletic Association, and St. Paul’s High School. His exceptional spirit of giving extends to his company’s employees as well, who are encouraged to sustain community nonprofits with their time, energy and financial resources.
Cleco Power LLC will be honored with the 2011 award for Outstanding Leadership in Corporate Philanthropy. For many years, Cleco Power has provided significant contributions of time, in-kind services, and monetary funds to Northshore communities. As examples, the company sponsors local youth activities, installs electrical connections for area festivals, and hangs Christmas lights across St. Tammany Parish. Employees are encouraged to volunteer, and have participated in blood drives, built local playgrounds and worked with Keep Slidell Beautiful. Since 1985, the company has offered the Power of Sharing Fund, to assist economically disadvantaged seniors and disabled citizens. Cleco Power customers and employees contribute to the fund, and the company matches those donations, which are distributed through the Louisiana Association of Councils on Aging to help with energy bills, to weatherize homes, and for other assistance. Additional organizations supported by Cleco Power include the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the March of Dimes, and the Salvation Army.
The Louisiana Breast Cancer Task Force (LBCTF) will be honored as the 2011 Outstanding Foundation. Created in 1992, the LBCTF is a small organization with a huge impact; the group of loyal volunteers (with no full-time paid staff) raises funds to re-grant to Louisiana nonprofits that work to eliminate and treat breast cancer. Since 2007, the Task Force’s financial support has been vital to the cancer program at Slidell Memorial Hospital, funding breast health kits, wigs, and educational resources. Other recent recipients include: Point Coupee General Hospital, to provide free mammograms to those in need, and Terrebonne General Medical Center, to provide educational and financial assistance to breast cancer patients.
Gardner and Ronnie Kole will be honored as the 2011 Outstanding Volunteer Fundraisers. Nineteen years ago, the Koles founded Jazz on the Bayou, an annual fundraising event held at their Bayou Liberty home. Since then, it has grown into a two-day festival of food and music that has raised more than $1 million for local agencies and nonprofits, including in particular, STARC and Easter Seals of Louisiana. The Koles’ passion for philanthropy has had a profound impact on these organizations, which have been able to launch and expand innovative programs to continue to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families.
Tickets for the event are $40 each. Table sponsorships (for 8 people) begin at $300 and include tickets and recognition. Tickets are limited and must be reserved in advance. Please contact Nicole Suhre at 985-898-4171 or via e-mail at nsuhre@stph.org to reserve tickets and for additional information.
THE ASSOCIATION OF FUNDRAISING PROFESSIONALS is a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-political organization, representing over 30,000 members in 200 chapters worldwide, with its primary goal being the advancement of ethics, knowledge and understanding in the field of fund raising for philanthropic causes, with the Northshore Chapter serving St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, & Washington parishes.

Contemporary singer-songwriter Brett Petry will join Barry Sharp, formerly of the Commander Cody Band, from10:00 to 11:00 AM. Madisonville’s own, multi-talented, fifteen-year-old Nathan Michael and his band, featuring singer Samantha Goodwin and guitarist Rick Delaune, will play from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Supporting the Community. Three important community organizations will benefit from the proceeds of the Rotary Chili Cook-off and Fair.
The first recipient is The New Heights Therapy Center in Folsom, which improves the lives of children and adults who have disabilities, by giving them hands-on experience with horses. This exposure promotes physical, cognitive, and emotional health. It also enhances integration of the disabled into family, school, and community activities, including the workforce, where appropriate.
Support Our war Heroes, based inSlidell, helps service members who sustained life-altering injuries inIraq orAfghanistan to rehabilitate and resume normal civilian lives. Their assistance covers immediate needs, whether financial, psychological, or physical. This foundation also provides private counseling for spouses and family members.
Finally, the non-profit agency Safe Harbor in Mandeville serves women and children in St Tammany Parish who are victims of domestic abuse. It provides a safe place and a variety of critical, support services, ranging from crisis intervention and legal advocacy to play groups and counseling for kids. Their professional staff and trained volunteers help bridge the gap between victimization and independence. They are available 24 hours a day. The services provided are completely confidential and free of charge.
These three organizations put into practice the Rotary Club’s motto of “service above self.” Founded in 1974, the Northlake-Mandeville Rotary Club is a group of professional and business people who meet weekly on Thursday at noon for comradeship and service at the Beau Chene Country Club. As members of Rotary International, we are dedicated to the advancement of goodwill, understanding, and peace around the world, by improving health, education, and the conditions of those in critical need. We have speakers at each meeting to keep us up to date on the communities we serve. You are welcome to join us.
For further information about the cook-off, the club, or to sign up as a team, click here or call either Steve Saux at 796-0689 or Rick Delaune at (504) 458-1013. We promise you a good time that will also benefit the community.

Historic Lang House in Mandeville is Moving to Higher
Ground
Patterson Shoring
relocates and preserves historic Pre-Civil War home
WHO:
Patterson Structural Moving and
Shoring, the Old Mandeville Historic Association in partnership with the
City of Mandeville and Mandeville City Councilmember Jeff Bernard
WHAT:
A press event to initiate the relocation and preservation of the historic Jean
Baptiste Lang House. There will be a short presentation followed by a
second-line procession, led by Regg Sanders Band, to kick off the move.
WHEN:
Saturday, October 8, 2011
9:00 a.m. – Work starts on the house
9:45 a.m. – Short presentation
10:00 a.m. – Second-line procession and actual moving of the Lang House
WHERE:
Jean Baptiste Lang House
2603 Lakeshore
Drive
Mandeville, LA
WHY:
The Jean Baptiste Lang House has been in a state of damage and neglect
since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the area in 2005. The city is moving and
rehabilitating the house to its original condition to make it available for
public visitation.
Built in 1850 for tobacco merchant
Jean Baptiste Lang, the Lang House is one of the oldest homes in Mandeville and
is a recognized example of the Anglo-Creole style. According to archivist and
historian Sally Reeves, “the Lang House is the sole example of a house in
Mandeville still standing with an archival elevation to document that it
remains substantially as built.” It is a valuable connection to Louisiana’s
past and dwindling inventory of historic properties.
HOW:
The City of Mandeville and the Old Mandeville Historic Association are
working together to save the house structurally and relocate it from the
donor’s property to Kierr Family Gardens, a site donated to the city. They
contracted with Patterson Shoring, which specializes in moving and elevating historic
buildings, to handle the work. Patterson’s team has been working for over two
months to stabilize and repair essential structural components. They are now
ready to move the house to the city’s site.
Patterson has moved and elevated
some of the world’s largest and country’s oldest structures including the
National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Iowa and recently, the
Firemen’s Monument in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans.
Patterson Structural Moving and Shoring
is the nation’s second largest structural mover and elevation company. With
more than 100 years of experience among its staff, Patterson is one of only a
handful of competent, qualified companies in the world that is trusted by
governments, insurance companies and families to move structures to new
locations safely. Led by Jeremy Patterson, the second-generation company has
moved and elevated more than 5,000 structures and has been featured on several
reality TV shows including TLC’s Heavy Haulers and Monster Movers. It has been
recognized with national awards from the International Association of
Structural Movers (IASM) including awards in 2010 for the Tallest and Longest
Structures Moved. Recent notable accomplishments include elevating the Alumni
House at Tulane University – a job sub-contracted through Abry Brothers – and
moving the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, the largest museum
relocation project in the world.
